FOUNDATIONS IN LEARNING DESIGN
Learning involves organizing information and understanding the relationships between various components. Over the course of the LDT program, Supra Badges have been the buckets that organized the many skills necessary for success as an instructional designer. As we have been progressing through the evolution of becoming a well-rounded designer, these Supra Badges have served as beacons. An extensive list of individual skills would not have provided a clear connection between our studies and the real world. When it comes to Supra Badges, each is comprised of skills that ladder up to a high-level theme, and each serves a distinct purpose in the instructional design process.
By learning the Professional Foundations of LDT, I developed essential research and communication skills. Conducting sound research and adhering to ethical codes are all included in this area, as well as continuing professional development, conveying ideas effectively, and participating in reciprocal feedback processes. Although each challenge demanded only one artifact to demonstrate competence, there are plenty of alternatives throughout the program. Among the presentations I created are a summary of my interview with a Product Manager, a design pitch for an educational video game about Japanese internment camps, and training on effective feedback methods. Not only did these presentations allow me to convey my ideas effectively, but many of them also involved knowledge of systematic design principles, peer feedback, citations, and sourcing of references.
In the course of this program, I have become more intentional, more strategic, and more aware of the entire life cycle of learning. However, I could only do that with the strong prerequisite knowledge needed to succeed. Without it, I would not have been able to effectively plan, analyze, design, and develop instructional materials. I would not have been prepared to provide meaningful feedback to my peers or methodically verify the credibility of sources.
This experience has been incredibly rewarding and has helped me to grow and develop as a professional. Many of these skills are the ABCs of being a professional: feedback, development, communication, and research. No matter where I end up next, I am confident that these skills will serve me in whatever role I am in.
