MODIFY ID PROCESS

Modify the instructional design process as project parameters change

For the competency “Modify the instructional design process as project parameters change,” I am submitting my eLearning module from EDCI 591. The artifacts are the storyboard and final version of a 10-15 minute Articulate Storyline course on the foundational concepts of a Competitive Analysis. During the design and development process, I had to modify the project scope to ensure it met the time requirements of the project. This proves I can effectively modify the project as project parameters change.

The intention behind the module was to support entry-level new hires and contractor positions to ensure they understand the foundational skills needed to effectively conduct competitive analyses at a market research agency. Originally, I thought this could be achieved in one module; however, in the very early stages of brainstorming, I realized that this would have to be the first in a series of modules, which is explained in the opening video in the module. However, this was not the only time I had to change the project's scope. As evident in the storyboard, the module was designed to have multiple competitor examples for each section. As I began developing the content in Storyline, it became clear that this would make the module too long. Therefore, I went back to the design phase and made some tweaks to make it shorter. By removing multiple examples and keeping only one or two for each section, it achieved the same benefits without extending the module overall.

I came across scope creep all the time when I was a teacher. My original idea for a unit would balloon into something bigger as I either realized students needed more time on certain concepts or I found something new that fit nicely in the unit that I wanted to try with them. By the end of the unit, I was scrambling to meet the deadline so I wouldn’t have to trim future units and jeopardize missing important standards that students needed to know by the end of the year. Therefore, I had to return to the unit plan and trim the parts that were not necessary. I had to use this same critical eye when modifying the eLearning module.

These artifacts prove that I can modify the project as project parameters change. From this project, I learned that often modules can take longer than one might expect just by looking at a storyboard, so this will be something I consider as I design future projects. To alleviate this issue, prototyping the module will help inform the design process and determine the length of each section. In the future, I will use this strategy to help during the design phase.
